Prompt for parameter value

Postby iSeriesGuy » Wed May 05, 2010 5:41 pm

When entering the parameters for the Data Generation Program how do I get the Prompt for value to be Selectable? I want to prompt for the parameters to be passed to the Host program.

I have not.
EI looks to be early in its development life cycle.
If it is to replace all of our custom interfaces to needs to have a lot more functionality like prompting for parameters.

I would disagree with your comment E/I is in early development. I have been using Integrator since 2003 and it has made great strides.

What you need to do is look at using a logical transaction vs. an Action. These let you create prompts, define them (like date fields for example), create relationships to them from other files and code files, perform complex or simple edits, and do a ton of other things (like supporting maintenance history).

Having said that I would agree. It would be nice if Actions had more robust values on the parameters. But again look at Logical Transaction features.

The ONLY thing I don't like about Logical Transactions is on list cards, you have to post to host. In action buttons they happen IMMEDIATLY so I still use these quite a bit.

E-mail me if you need more details. But LOGICAL TRANSACTIONS give you what you need in prompting and validating, and editing, and performing complex acitons much like what you can do on a "real" business object.

Hi

I am looking at a way to prompt a user for various parameters as i used to do in green screen then pass that to the system with a submitted job

are there any examples anywhere?

thanks in advance

Josh
i can provide you with some samples. My question is would you want to peform this on a given (selected) record or are you doing this over a group of records (ie logical transaction vs. a host job/report over a list or multiple selected records). But their is a way to do this, and then submit a host job.

The other alternative is a Host Job on the application card, but this is limited in prompting much as an action button is (can't have discrete domains, dropdowns, code files, and provide default values based on conditions).

But I have tons of examples using a variety of scenero's (for example are you running over a selected record, all records, simply just the entire business object, etc..).

I've also seen some clever examples of creating a business object/file simply to handle the submit of a "report" to the Host. Where you essentially make the file a report/parm request and then by creating or hitting an action button you are submitting the report. (vs. building this over a given business object like MO's or Sales orders, or items).

Hi Kevin

thanks for the reply

we have just moved to release 9 XA and i am looking for the easiest way to add reports i have on xa green screen menus to the IDF environment

they are not over specific objects usually generic reports - some with prompt screens - others just submit to the jobq or run interactively

just looking for pointers or examples/screen sots for the best way to include these.

John

ps thanks for the helpful slides in the share docmentation section.

Kevin

any examples or screen shots would be very helpful
